When I was pestering asking [livejournal.com profile] eyesfromeden mun to play Chris for me, it was brought to my attention that I haven't really explained how Aeron's canon is different from the Petshop of Horrors manga. A few months and several babbling texts later, I feel confident enough to throw up a scattered overview.

Many many moons ago, there was a meme floating around to post a certain number of facts about your character, a portion of them NSFW. Given that the journal I saw it in has been deleted for years, I'm just going wing it.

Yes, Aeron did. Aeron is a pre-op male to female transsexual.

So why does Aeron refer to herself with male pronouns and as a cross-dresser? As far as the pronouns go, Aeron has just recently come to the realization that she is transsexual, and is still figuring out what that means to her. While she does, she's taking comfort in the familiar and continuing to refer to herself and be referred to in narrative by masculine terms. This will change as Aeron's comfort with her gender grows. As of 10/17/2010, Aeron has begun referring to herself with female pronouns.

As for the cross-dressing label, Aeron refers to herself that way because she hasn't had gender assignment surgery or any hormone therapy. Until or unless she begins one or the other, Aeron will likely continue to refer to herself as a cross-dresser, even after she adopts feminine pronouns.
